Our realities, our stories
Our lives are made up of innumerable external realities. Our parents divorce. We fall in love. We lose a loved one. We age. But our internal, personal realities are shaped by the stories we tell about these external realities.
For many reasons, the stories we tell are often “problem laden.” My parents were not good parents because I was such a bad child. My lover left because I’m unlovable. I’ve reached a certain age and am afraid I’ve wasted my life.
The narrative approach
A big part of my work is helping clients identify their problem-laden narratives and then helping them re-tell these stories. Together, we often find deep importance in understanding these narratives and then finding a way to edit them to reflect a healthier story.
