Our realities, our stories
Our lives are made up of innumerable external realities. Our parents divorce. We fall in love. We lose a loved one. We age. But our internal, personal realities are shaped by the stories we tell about these external realities.
Problem-laden narratives
For many reasons, the stories we tell are often “problem laden.” My parents were not good parents because I was such a bad child. My lover left because I’m unlovable. I’ve reached a certain age and am afraid I’ve wasted my life.
The narrative approach
A big part of my work is helping clients identify their problem-laden narratives and then helping them re-tell these stories. Together, we often find deep importance in understanding these narratives and then finding a way to edit or rewrite them to reflect a healthier story.
